Politics isn’t something that appears on the blog often, if ever. Worthy of a mention though is that this morning Bertie Ahern announced that he is to step down as Taoiseach on May the 6th 2008.
I’m no expert on political life in Ireland, i don’t pretend to be. I’m a normal Joe (ben for that matter) who pays taxes and lives like everyone else. The Irish blogosphere has been littered with strong minded opinions about the current government and the ongoing tribunals that are strongly linked with Mr Ahern. While i don’t deny that there are certain untruths that need to be uncovered and i don’t accept that it would be best for the country that he did step down, it is hard not to acknowledge that he has successfully steered the country for the past 11 years. I personally have a lot achieved in my lifestyle thanks to the current and past governments led by Bertie, for one without the SSIA i would not have bought my own house.
While i know i will be the only one who doesn’t put up a photoshopped bertie behind bars picture or lament about how much of a crook he is, I would rather ask a question.
Who would you have do his job?
Bear in mind that you start waving the corruption / party donation / sterling exchange stick your going to hit a lot of leading politicians from ALL party’s. I’m not as naive to think that this of course makes it right for anyone in public service to abuse their position for financial or other gain – it’s not.
So rather than jump on the bertie-bashing bandwagon, i would rather tip the hat to you Mr. Ahern and say thank you for your years of service and wish you the best of luck in the future whatever it is you may find yourself doing.

So now hairy you have to be told by the state how to save for your house .
They didn’t tell me how to save, they ENABLED me to be able to increase my savings by 25% and that dermo led me to being able to save for my house.
